SAN CLEMENTE : City Council OKs Animal Shelter Plan
The City Council has approved a scaled-back plan for a new animal shelter that will reduce the size of the project by about a third.
The council voted last week to eliminate 2,000 square feet from the shelter, half of it in the office area and half in the kennel.
Kumi Johnson, the city’s purchasing manager, said the original design was crafted by an architect who was not given a suggested construction cost and would have cost $800,000. The design changes cut in half the cost of building the shelter.
Johnson said the money to build the shelter will come from Friends of San Clemente Animals and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The federal money is available because the previous shelter on Avenida Pico was damaged by heavy rains in 1993, Johnson said.
Johnson said the new shelter is on a schedule to be built by October. The design allows for future additions to the building.
The 4,000-square-foot shelter will be in an industrial park on Avenida Fabricante.
