The national Cable News Network will cover the Tet celebration, the Vietnamese New Year, which will take place at Golden West College today and Sunday.

Philip Westin, president of the community college, said he was happy that CNN will record the two-day event, which will feature costume contests and a variety of ethnic foods.

The celebration will take place in the parking lot at Gothard and McFadden streets and will last from 10 a.m. to midnight today and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Children under four feet tall will be admitted free, as will those who dress up in traditional Vietnamese costumes.

“It’s an exciting event,” said Westin. “We do this every year and we always have a huge turnout, and not only the Vietnamese show up. People come from all over the place. I know students from Pepperdine who plan to be there.”

About 25% of the college’s student body is of Vietnamese descent, Westin said.
