SOUTH-CENTRAL : Youths Receive Grant for Baseball Gear

A South-Central baseball program has received a $4,000 grant to buy bats, gloves and uniforms for about 50 youngsters.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation last week chose the Youth Baseball Fellowship of America as one of 23 Southern California youth sports groups to share a $1-million grant.

“This is going to help get our program off the ground,” said O’tha Evans, president of the Youth Baseball Fellowship.

Evans’ group has involved hundreds of youngsters in T-ball teams for the past two years. In April, the program plans to expand its scope, offering baseball leagues to dozens of the 9- to 12-year-olds.

Patrick Escobar, vice president of grants and programming for the Amateur Athletic Foundation, said his organization was impressed with Evans’ group and its ability to find volunteers and donations to maintain its program. “That’s pretty darn good,” he said. “We need more of that.”

The Amateur Athletic Foundation, launched with surplus funds from the 1984 Olympic Games, has given more than $60 million to area sports groups over 10 years.
