A 25-year-old fan was fatally stabbed before Sunday’s game between AC Milan and Genoa, touching off a rampage and forcing the cancellation of the match at Genoa, Italy.

For several hours after the stabbing, youths milled outside Luigi Ferraris Stadium. Police kept AC Milan fans huddled inside in the dark for their protection.

The game was scoreless when officials called it off at halftime, apparently the first cancellation in Italy because of fan violence.

Fans then destroyed two buses outside the stadium, smashed car windows, sets cars afire and threw rocks at police.
