A gray wolf that authorities said had apparently been feeding on a newborn calf was found shot to death in a setback for a government plan to restore wolves to the Rocky Mountain states.

Federal wildlife agents launched an investigation into the killing of one of the 15 wolves that were captured in Canada and released in Idaho earlier this month. Fourteen other wolves were released in pens in Yellowstone National Park.

The government allows ranchers to shoot any of the wolves released into Idaho and Wyoming if they can prove the animal attacked livestock.
