2 Officials Criticize Sex Education Rules

Faced with criticism that some sex education lessons violate state law, the Ventura County Board of Education decided to table a discussion on the issue until members can provide proof of the violations.

Board President Wendy Larner on Monday asked for revisions to the board’s policy and rules regarding sex education and family life lessons given to children in special-education classrooms run by the county superintendent of schools office.

Larner said she believes some instructors are including material that is inappropriate for children or are failing to emphasize abstinence as a means for preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

But she and fellow board member Angela Miller, who supported Larner’s argument, were unable to cite specific violations. County Superintendent Charles Weis asked the board to postpone the discussion until members can provide concrete examples.

Larner and Miller said they would provide such examples at the board’s next meeting.
