LOS ANGELES : IRS Grants Filing Extension for Victims of Recent Floods

The Internal Revenue Service granted an extension for flood victims who are unable to meet Tuesday’s deadline for filing federal tax returns for pension and other employee benefit plans.

The extension to March 2 is good for plans in counties designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a federal disaster area, IRS spokeswoman Laurie Keleman said.

President Clinton declared 38 counties in California disaster areas, including Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The extension gives more time to plan administrators who are unable to obtain the information necessary for filing from service providers, banks or insurance companies whose operations are directly affected by the flooding, Keleman said.

It also applies to flood-stricken banks and insurance companies required in certain instances to file reports directly to the U.S. Department of Labor, she said.
