Tough anti-drunk driving enforcement in Irvine is paying off, according to the city’s police chief.

Irvine police report a record number of drunk-driving arrests during the holidays thanks to the efforts of the department’s traffic and patrol officers.

Chief Charles S. Brobeck said his officers “took the enforcement side to the nonbelievers with a vengeance.”

There were 79 misdemeanor arrests for driving under the influence and one felony arrest in December.

The number represents a 43% increase in arrests compared to the same period in 1993 and a 248% increase compared to December, 1992.

The 49 and Holding Singles Club will play host to a dinner.

The club has a membership of about 350 single people 49 years old and older. They reside anywhere from Long Beach to the southern tip of Orange County. Some members are retired and some are working, but they indulge in a variety of events during the year. The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Steer Inn, 444 Lakeview Ave., Anaheim.
