Most of us know the minute we walk into a furniture store whether it’s for us. There’s an ambience that says, “Yes.” A new addition to the San Fernando Valley has that feeling that says, “Sit down and visit.” It’s called Haven, and it’s country, it’s pine, and it’s well-made reproductions with flair.

Haven has a flair for reasonable prices too. This doesn’t mean discounts of 50% or more, but rather good prices that are less for the value than most other furniture stores have.

A large pine armoire with rust-colored grillwork in an acorn design is $575. A matching queen-size bed is $475. At many of the stores I visit, these pieces would have been at least $200 to $300 more.

Another excellent buy in a queen-size bed is a sleigh bed based on the Biedermeier style and priced at $475.

To accompany the bed--and also in the Biedermeier style--is a seven-drawer lingerie chest for $399. I have seen this chest selling elsewhere for $549.

A “picket fence” coffee table, so named because it’s made of wood slats styled like a picket fence, is charming, though a tad impractical since the bottom shelf is inaccessible for magazines and other items. It is unique--I’ve never seen one like it--and would look great in a “garden” room or on a patio. It’s well priced at $475.

It is apparent after checking out Haven’s inventory that the designs have been carefully chosen. These are the styles you see in current decorator showrooms, where they are priced much higher.

The hottest item in furniture these days is the slipcovered sofa, and Haven has a good supply of several styles: rolled-arm, T-cushion arm and tuxedo.

One rolled-arm sofa, 100 inches long, is upholstered in an off-white fabric only, but there is a choice of more than 300 fabrics for the preshrunk slipcovers. The frame, of kiln-dried elder, comes with a lifetime guarantee to the original buyer. Haven’s price is $1,395, about $300 to $400 less than many stores charge for pieces of this quality.

Haven’s own line includes a six-foot sofa with seven choices of upholstery fabric and another seven for the slipcover. It’s priced at $895.

Mix-and-match choices in sofa fabrics are very popular now, and a 96-inch sofa in this style is priced at $995. A major department store sells a comparable item for $1,199.

We like Haven’s trade-in program for slipcovers: Any slipcover purchased at the store along with a frame will be taken for trade-in at any time. Haven gives a credit of 50% of the slipcover’s original value toward purchase of a new slipcover.
