Nobody said they wouldn’t score runs.

Cal State Fullerton’s baseball team proved Friday night its lineup can make things happen by defeating No. 1 Stanford, 11-9, at Titan Field. The victory only increased concerns about the Titans’ pitching and defense, however.

Trailing, 9-7, the Titans (2-0) took the lead in the eighth. Catcher Brian Loyd walked to lead off and first baseman D.C. Olsen, who went two for five and drove in two runs, doubled to left. Pinch-hitter Ramon Hernandez walked and Loyd scored on a wild pitch by Stanford reliever Tom Reimers (1-1), who took the loss.

Left fielder C.J. Ankrum walked and right fielder Jeremy Giambi tied the score with a single to score pinch-runner David Pruett.

Third baseman Tony Martinez grounded to second base but pinch runner Ted Silva scored.

Center fielder Mark Kotsay, who went two for four with three RBIs, added a sacrifice fly.

Mark Chavez pitched a perfect ninth, earning a save for Tom Dillon (1-0), who struck out the only batter he faced.

Titan starter Jon Ward pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up nine hits and seven runs. Fullerton also committed two errors, which played a part in Stanford’s five-run sixth.
