Student Senate Holds the Authority

Share

In your Jan. 31 story on “Athletic Referendum to Be Presented by CSUN President,” the Los Angeles Times has once again claimed that the authority to place a referendum on the A.S. ballot is in the hands of university President Blenda Wilson and not the Associated Students Senate.

I want to make clear that President Wilson’s role in the debate over whether to place another referendum on the ballot is strictly an advisory one. It is the Associated Students Senate, under the restraints of its Constitution, that has the final authority to decide the fate of a third ballot initiative.

President Wilson herself stated that point when she addressed the Senate in January, saying she would not support a referendum that first did not enjoy the support of CSUN’s student leaders.

The Associated Students has a long-standing tradition of independence on matters related to fee increases.

That independence must be maintained if the student voice is to remain strong.
