TAPESTRY TRIBUTE: Carole King’s 1972 album “Tapestry”--which at the time was the biggest-selling album in the history of pop--is being celebrated by a diverse roster of artists recording all the original songs for an upcoming tribute album, due in the summer.
Already completed are Celine Dion’s version of “A Natural Woman” (produced by David Foster), Amy Grant’s “It’s Too Late,” Faith Hill’s “Where You Lead” and Curtis Stigers’ “Home Again.” In the works is a teaming of BeBe & CeCe Winans with Aretha Franklin for “You’ve Got a Friend.”
Jason Flom, Atlantic Records’ head of A&R; (and soon to run his own Atlantic subsidiary label), says that the idea was to do something beyond the standard tribute project and honor “one of the seminal albums of our time, especially in terms of songwriting.” And though King herself won’t perform on the collection, it’s got her blessing--she’s being consulted about the artists and production.
