COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Women No Match for Maxwell, New Mexico State

Anita Maxwell scored a game-high 36 points to lead New Mexico State to an 82-63 victory over UC Irvine in a Big West Conference game Sunday in Las Cruces, N.M.

Maxwell, a junior forward who was the Big West Conference player of the year last season, had 22 points in the first half as New Mexico State (13-6, 8-3) opened a 40-29 lead. She made 11 of 21 shots from the field and 14 of 18 free throws.

Maxwell had scored 40 points but UC Irvine won, 72-70, when the teams met Jan. 8 in Irvine.

Jinelle Williams had 15 points and Cher Scanlon added 13, including three three-pointers, for the Anteaters (10-8, 7-4).

In other Big West Conference games:

Cal State Fullerton 59, Nevada Las Vegas 54--Koko Lahanas scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds for visiting Fullerton (8-10, 5-6). Lahanas had 16 in the first half as the Titans opened a 39-28 lead.

Nevada Las Vegas rallied and led, 47-46, with about 11 minutes left but Lahanas’ basket put the Titans in the lead for good. Las Vegas (7-11, 7-5) came within a point, 55-54, with 38 seconds left, but Fullerton’s Lorie Randle made two free throws and Lahanas added a layup to close out the scoring.

Tracy Titus, a senior from Loara High School, had 11 points and 16 rebounds and LeAnn Kazmer, a junior from Orange Coast College, added 11 points for Las Vegas.

In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 5-6, Cal State Northridge 3-0--Brandi Isgar pitched a four-hitter in the second game for visiting Fullerton (2-0). Jennifer Mortensen pitched a four-hitter and gave up three unearned runs in the first game for the Titans.

In the first game: Julie Williams had a home run and the Titans took advantage of four errors to score four unearned runs. Senetha Thomas had a home run and two RBIs and Heidi Robertson had a hit and two RBIs in the second game.
