COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Duke Ends Futility With ACC Surprise

In a season of missed opportunities, Duke finally got it right Thursday night, upsetting No. 18 Georgia Tech, 77-70, at Durham, N.C.

“It’s just been crazy how this year has been going,” senior Erik Meek said after Duke broke its school-record nine-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak.

Pete Gaudet got his first ACC victory since taking over for ailing Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Duke (11-11, 1-9) got key baskets from freshmen Trajan Langdon and Ricky Price in a span of 20 seconds down the stretch to go on top for good after Georgia Tech (15-7, 6-4) had rallied from an 11-point deficit to lead 68-67 with 2 minutes 35 seconds left.

Cherokee Parks led Duke with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 12 Arkansas 88, Memphis 87--Elmer Martin, a senior making his first start of the season, made two free throws with 32 seconds left and the Razorbacks (18-5) slipped past the Tigers (17-6) at Fayetteville, Ark., despite poor free-throw shooting.

Corliss Williamson led Arkansas with 28 points. Lorenzen Wright had 20 for Memphis.

Jason Osborne scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half to lead Louisville (15-8, 6-4) to a 79-64 Metro Conference victory over South Florida (12-7, 2-4) at Tampa, Fla. . . . Chris Kingsbury scored a career-high 32 points and Andre Woolridge scored a career-best 23 as Iowa (14-8, 4-6) beat Northwestern (5-14, 1-9), 116-77, in a Big Ten game featuring five technical fouls and the ejection of the Wildcats’ leading rebounder, Brian Chamberlain. . . . Doug Muse scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Santa Barbara (11-8, 6-5) defeated San Jose State (1-18, 0-11), 71-66, in Big West Conference action at San Jose. . . . Reggie Minton scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead Air Force (6-15, 2-10) to an 81-53 Western Athletic Conference rout of San Diego State (7-12, 2-9) at Air Force Academy, Colo.

College Basketball Notes

Cory Alexander, a junior point guard and the No. 2 scorer for 17th-ranked Virginia, will miss the rest of the season because of a broken right ankle suffered in Wednesday night’s victory over North Carolina State.
