L.A. Courts and Camp O.J.

I was dismayed to read the interview with Vincent Scully (Public Places, “Beaming Up the Wrong Image,” Feb. 4). I do not doubt for a second Scully’s credibility as an architectural critic, but Jane Spiller interviewed the wrong source.
The original master plan (for the Criminal Courts area) did include a plaza with underground parking and a bridge at the east end of the plaza connecting to City Hall. Incidentally, this was designed by Adrian Wilson & Associates, which is now owned by my firm, HNTB Architects.
It is an unfortunate reality that the public open spaces designed in conjunction with a building project are the first to go when construction budget costs gets cut. That is the reason why you don’t see “a great square or a garden,” as Scully romanticized.
ETHEL G. RUBIO, (The writer is an assistant project manager with HNTB.)
