IRVINE : School District Revives Search for Superintendent

Share

School board members have revived the search for a new superintendent, saying they need a full-time leader to guide the 23-year-old Irvine Unified School District through perilous financial times.

Management Analysis and Planning Associates will be paid $9,800 to conduct a statewide search. The Berkeley-based firm surveyed community members in November on the qualities desired in a new superintendent.

Former Supt. David E. Brown left the district in October after six years to become superintendent of the Napa Valley Unified School District. He was the second superintendent of the 21,500-student Irvine school district.

“More than ever, we need a permanent leader for our organization,” said school board member Mary Ellen Hadley. “We need a person with the energy and the education and the talent to lead this school district.”

Trustees fear the district could lose $10.5 million from $105 million on deposit in the county’s troubled investment pool.

The school board on Wednesday will consider cutting $3 million from the next school year’s $100-million budget, which could prompt the layoff of up to 120 teachers. Layoff decisions will not be made until March 15.
