The Times Wins Top CNPA Award for General Excellence

The Los Angeles Times on Saturday received the California Newspaper Publishers Assn.’s top award for general excellence in 1994 among the state’s largest daily newspapers.

The Times also won first place in public service and editorial comment and second place in spot news photos, design and illustration or informational graphics.

The San Jose Mercury News took second place in general excellence among California newspapers with more than 200,000 daily circulation.

The newspaper association, meeting in San Francisco, presented awards in 26 categories and five circulation ranges to 75 daily and 87 weekly newspapers among CNPA’s 460 member newspapers. The awards were presented at CNPA’s annual Better Newspapers Contest awards luncheon.

Among dailies with circulation over 200,000, the other awards were:

The Daily News of Los Angeles won first place in investigative or enterprise reporting and business or financial stories and second place in local spot news.

The Orange County Register won first place in local spot news, non-local spot news, feature stories, spot news photos and sports stories and second place in public service and columns, commentary or criticism.

The Sacramento Bee won first place in design and columns, commentary or criticism and second place in feature stories.

The San Diego Union-Tribune won first place in literacy programs and second place in non-local spot news, feature photos and business or financial stories.

The San Francisco Chronicle won second place in investigative or enterprise reporting.

The San Jose Mercury News, in addition to its second place in general excellence, won first place in feature photos and second place in editorial comment and sports stories.
