Irvine residents with hazardous waste to get rid of have seen that service cut dramatically because of the county bankruptcy.

The county’s Hazardous Waste Collection Center on Oak Canyon Avenue in Irvine, which until recently was opened six days a week, is now open only on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The county also intends to enforce a 100-car-per-day limit to “minimize disposal costs.”

City officials say they are working with the County Integrated Waste Management Department to plan for potential problems from the shortened hours that might include “excessive customer demand” and illegal waste dumping.
