Trouble in Candyland

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Fruit Snacks are chewy jujube-like treats shaped like the aforesaid TV cartoon heroes (and various weapons, vehicles and Megazords). But hey, where’s Tommy, the one in green? Jason, Jason--you’re taking this rivalry too far!

Hey, Sorry About the Meeting--We Overslept

The coffee-producing countries have threatened to reduce their exports until coffee reaches $1.90 a pound. Well, we’ll see. Brazil didn’t show up at a recent meeting of five Central American coffee-producing countries, and resulting doubts about whether the producers can carry off their threat actually drove coffee prices to a seven-week low.

Buried Alive in Chocolate

If you got too much chocolate for Valentine’s Day--well, you’re obviously adorable, but that doesn’t mean you have to eat it. The first 500 who send in a box of chocolates to “Life Shouldn’t Be a Box of Chocolates,” c/o 924 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10010, will get a free box of MET-Rx food bars. A cousin of the chocolate- and vanilla-flavored MET-Rx shake, they taste like candy but each bar contains vitamins, 30 grams of protein and only 2.5 grams of fat.

Hot Lips

Jennifer Trainer Thompson, author of “Hot Licks: Great Recipes for Making and Cooking With Hot Sauces” (Chronicle Books), has created her own hot sauce, Jump Up and Kiss Me. Sporting a big red lipstick kiss on the label, it’s made from Scotch bonnet peppers (first cousin to the habanero), papayas, ginger and garlic. Available from Hot Hot Hot, 56 S. Delacy St. Pasadena; Christopher Ranch Garlic Store in the Glendale Galleria; the Mo Hotta Mo Betta catalog, (800) 462-3220; and other fine chile-lunatic suppliers.

eGG on the Superhighway

Mysteriously, “addresses” like https://www.deltanet.com/2way/egg don’t look so strange anymore. That one happens to be the Internet address of eGG (Electronic Gourmet Guide), an on-line food magazine. Just like a conventional magazine it has articles, recipes, food trivia (the eGGsters also sell their own food trivia game on floppy disk) and interviews. The eGG people recommend browsing it using Netscape, which is downloadable from their page. On all most Internet directories, including Yahoo.

Garbage Into Gold

Last year Vons Markets noted that half the waste they had to dispose of--93 tons a day--was produce spoilage and trimmings, so they set up a 500-acre compost facility in Lamont, Calif., to recycle it. All 334 Vons stores in Southern California and Nevada are now in the program, which sells the compost to San Joaquin Valley farmers, cutting Vons’ refuse costs $2.7 million a year and reducing the amount of water used on crops as much as 42%. (Incidentally, the wooden and cardboard boxes the produce came in are ground up and composted right along with it.)

Uh. Huhhuhhuh. Cool, I Guess

MTV has turned down a proposal to license the names and images of giggling cartoon characters Beavis & Butthead for a brand of milk in Holland.
