COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Kotsay Leads Titans by San Diego

Mark Kotsay scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the fifth inning to break a tie and also pitched a scoreless ninth inning to save the Titans’ sixth consecutive victory, 3-2, over San Diego Wednesday night at Titan Field.

John Mitchell (2-0) pitched five innings, giving up four hits, one earned run and six strikeouts to earn the victory.

Tony Miranda was two for three for the Titans, ranked third in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.

The Toreros (3-2) loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning, but Mark Chavez struck out Kevin Schramm and Titan catcher Brian Loyd picked a runner off first base. Eric Morton then ended the rally, popping out to second base.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Chapman 9, Biola 0--James Baker, Kevin Hill, Juan Melchor, Erik Koral and Goro Miyano each won in singles for Chapman (2-1). Baker defeated Raniel Diaz, 6-2, 6-1; Hill beat Josh Halquist, 6-2, 6-2; Melchor beat Carson Morris, 6-0, 6-1; Koral beat Josh Bridston, 6-3, 6-4, and Miyano beat Ben Ahern, 6-1, 6-3.

UCLA 6, UC Irvine 1--Chris Tontz was the lone bright spot for UC Irvine, upsetting Robert Janecek, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Janecek is ranked No. 22 in the nation. UCLA is ranked fourth in the nation. UCI is ranked 37th.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, UC Irvine 2--The Anteaters took fifth-ranked Long Beach State to the fifth game, but were unable to pull off the upset. The 49ers won, 15-17, 15-13, 12-15, 15-3, 23-21.

Tom Hoff had 31 kills and setter Steve Walker had 68 assists for Long Beach State (5-2, 4-2). Leland Quinn had 32 kills and Jason Hinchman had 78 assists for UC Irvine (3-3, 2-3).
