LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Residents Face Deadline for Replacing Green Cards

Share

Legal permanent residents with green cards issued before 1978 were reminded Thursday that they must file for a replacement by March 20.

The old card, model I-151, will be replaced with one that has the holder’s photograph, fingerprint and signature, said Immigration and Naturalization Service spokesman Rico Cabrera.

The new card is good for 10 years.

Pre-1978 green cards will no longer be valid proof of legal residence after March 20, Cabrera said, adding that legal residents who travel abroad without a valid card may experience delays or difficulties when re-entering the United States.

Cabrera said replacement applications should be submitted to the East Los Angeles INS office, 1241 S. Soto St., between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays.

The $75 fee must be paid by check or money order. No cash will be accepted, Cabrera said.

Forms may be picked up at the INS Los Angeles district office, 300 N. Los Angeles St., or at the Westminster satellite office in Orange County, 14560 Magnolia Ave.

Forms also may be obtained by calling (213) 526-7647; the applications will be mailed in a week to 10 days.
