A reception to salute the new presidents of two local community colleges is scheduled March 9 and will be open to the public.

Christine Johnson will head Cypress College, while Vera Martinez takes over as top administrator at Fullerton College.

Johnson is the first black president of Cypress College and Martinez is the first Latina in the top post at Fullerton. They also are the first women to head the sister colleges.

Their reception is being hosted by 100 Black Men of Orange County, Los Amigos of Orange County and the local American Assn. of Women in Community Colleges, who will present the new presidents with commendations and congratulatory proclamations from North County cities and school districts, said Galal Kernahan, an event organizer.

Tax-deductible donations of $30 per person will be accepted at the reception. Proceeds will be used to provide transportation for more than 8,000 kindergarten students to four colleges in the county as part of the second “Kindercaminata” program--an event designed to encourage youngsters to pursue higher education.

The reception, which will include a buffet dinner and entertainment, will be at the Garden Grove Community Center, 11300 Stanford Ave. in Garden Grove, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
