Share

The treatment of Japanese and Japanese American women in World War II internment camps will be the emphasis of a lecture titled “America’s Concentration Camps” to be given Tuesday evening.

The presentation will made by Diane Fujino, a professor of Asian women’s studies at UC Santa Barbara. Using photographs and posters, Fujino will provide a historical overview of the internment of 110,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans imprisoned by the U.S. government during the war, after being accused of sympathizing with Japan.

The event will be sponsored by the Los Angeles Radical Women, a feminist organization dedicated to social causes of women and minorities.

Special attention will be given to the conditions and treatment faced by female prisoners, said Christine Browning, local organizer for Los Angeles Radical Women. Insights into political and economic factors behind the internment will be discussed, and participants will be encouraged to discuss similarities to today’s civil rights struggles, she said.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Teamsters Building, 1616 W. 9th St. It is open to the public. The admission fee of $5 will include dinner. A work exchange can be arranged in lieu of the admission fee for students and low-income participants. The Los Angeles Radical Women meet monthly and often present educational forums and lectures on issues affecting women and minority groups.
