A 26-year-old woman was arrested Saturday on suspicion of fleeing the scene of an accident after hitting a man with her car, then crashing the car into an apartment where young children were sleeping, police said.

The pedestrian, Francisco Roman, 25, of Huntington Beach, was critically injured in the early morning accident and taken to UCI Medical Center. He died about 6 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Alma Jones of Huntington Beach was jailed on charges of felony hit-and-run and felony drunk driving in connection with the accident, which took place in an alley in the 17000 block of Queens Avenue.

She was held in lieu of $10,000 bail at the Huntington Beach City Jail.

After Roman’s death Saturday night, officers said accident investigators would review the case on Monday to see if additional charges are warranted.

Police Lt. Luis Ochoa said Jones was driving through the alley “at a high rate of speed” when she struck Roman.

The Huntington Beach man suffered multiple injuries in the crash, police said.

Authorities did not know if Jones and Roman knew each other, but Ochoa said it did not appear that the accident was intentional.

Ochoa said Jones lost control of her car early Saturday after hitting Roman, then crashed into the apartment, where an infant and an older child were asleep.

“When the vehicle plowed into the apartment, it knocked the bed across that room,” Ochoa said. “They were all shaken and wakened, but luckily none of them was injured.”

Ochoa said Jones fled the scene on foot “but was later located and arrested at her residence.”
