North Carolina, in line to be No. 1 again after Connecticut’s loss to Villanova the day before, stepped out of line Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.

More accurately, the No. 2 Tar Heels were pushed out by Harold Deane, who made all eight of his second-half shots and scored 28 points in leading No. 16 Virginia to a 73-71 Atlantic Coast Conference victory.

His two free throws with 4.2 seconds to play won the game.

Virginia, 18-6 overall and 10-3 in the ACC, won its sixth game in a row and has beaten the Tar Heels (20-3, 10-3) five times in their last seven visits to University Hall.

“We can’t do any better covering him,” North Carolina Coach Dean Smith said of Deane, who had 18 points in Virginia’s 81-77 victory over the Tar Heels a year ago. “The only thing left that may be the best thing to do is to run away from him.”

No. 5 Massachusetts 91, Louisville 76--Marcus Camby is back from an injury and he added 16 points to Lou Roe’s 21 as the Minutemen (20-3) overwhelmed Louisville’s inside players at Worcester, Mass.

UMass scored 69 points inside the free-throw lane.

It was the third loss in a row for the Cardinals (15-11) since they lost freshman Samaki Walker, their second-leading scorer and leading rebounder, because of a stress fracture in his right foot.

No. 7 Maryland 74, Cincinnati 72--Joe Smith sank two free throws with 16.1 seconds to play at San Antonio and finished with 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Terrapins (20-5) to a victory.

It was the first time in 10 seasons they have won 20 games.

Exree Hipp had 16 points and Johnny Rhodes 15 for Maryland. Cincinnati (17-9) was led by reserve Darnell Burton with 21. Danny Fortson and LaZell Durden each had 12 for the Bearcats.

Cincinnati tied the score, 68-68, with two minutes to play on a jump shot by Fortson. Rhodes answered with Maryland’s only three-point basket of the half, putting the Terrapins ahead to stay.
