The program is a cooperative effort between the Internal Revenue Service, various area accounting firms and the center, which was established 21 years ago.

An estimated 1,200 people were assisted last year at the center, which was kept open in the wake of the Northridge earthquake, school officials said.

IRS Commissioner Margaret Richardson journeyed from Washington to present the center with a plaque for its efforts.
