NHL ROUNDUP : Soderstrom Too Much in Islander Triumph

Tommy Soderstrom stopped 22 shots and goals by Ray Ferraro and Pierre Turgeon lifted the New York Islanders to a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Uniondale, N.Y. on Tues-day.

Soderstrom was 92 seconds away from his eighth career shutout, but Mike Keane wristed a shot over his glove on a Canadien power-play.

The victory moved the Islanders into sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Division, and brought them to the .500 mark. Coupled with Saturday’s win over Pittsburgh, New York managed consecutive victories for the first time in nearly a month.

San Jose 4, Vancouver 3--Johan Garpenlov and Jeff Odgers scored their first goals of the season and the Sharks withstood a furious third-period assault by the Canucks for a victory at Vancou-ver.

Pat Falloon opened the scoring for San Jose and Ulf Dahlen got the fourth goal as theSharks ended a five-game losing streak.

Florida 0, New York Rangers 0--John Vanbiesbrouck made 44 saves and the Panthers held on for a tie with the Rangers at New York.

It was Florida’s first scoreless tie.

The Rangers couldn’t get anything past Vanbiesbrouck despite six power plays.

They outshot the Panthers, 44-23, but Vanbiesbrouck played one of his strongest gamesof the season in recording his second shutout and 19th of his career.

Philadelphia 4, Washington 2--Shjon Podein’s goal early in the third period lifted the Flyers at Philadelphia.

Eric Lindros celebrated his 22nd birthday with an empty-net goal with 18 seconds remain-ing.

Hartford 6, Ottawa 3--Geoff Sanderson and Darren Turcotte each scored twice to lead the Whalers past the Senators at Ottawa.

The Whalers scored two goals in an early 47-second span to take control of the game.

Jimmy Carson and Pat Verbeek also scored for the Whalers, who won for the fifth time in eight games.

Troy Murray, Rob Gaudreau and Steve Larouche, scoring his first goal in his firstNHL game, replied for the Senators.

Calgary 5, Edmonton 2--Theoren Fleury and Mike Sullivan got the Flames going with early goalsin each of the first two periods in a victory at Calgary, Alberta.

Other scorers for Calgary were Ron Stern, Kevin Dahl and Joel Otto.

Oilers goalie Fred Brathwaite made 30 saves, nine more than Kidd.

Dallas 4, Winnipeg 0--Dave Gagner scored twice for the Stars as they made good use of the power-play at Winnipeg, Manitoba.
