AZUSA : Board Orders Probe of Water Contamination

Share

The Regional Water Quality Control Board this week ordered the Azusa Landfill to investigate the nature and extent of ground water contamination from its operation.

The board required the landfill, run by Browning-Ferris Industries, to install water monitoring wells to determine how far plumes of pollutants extend from the site.

The company must test for three compounds of the cancer-causing chemical benzene, as well as other toxic substances. The landfill was recently identified by the EPA as a potentially responsible contributor to contamination of the San Gabriel Valley aquifer.

The company must submit a plan for the testing by March 24. The board will review the plan and set a deadline for its completion. On April 3, the board will conduct a public hearing on conditions for the landfill’s future operations.
