You’ve probably heard by now about the new driving test. The horror of driving on the freeway and parking between cones--things that prompt you to call every DMV in Southern California until you find one that gives the old test.

You’ve heard of people who have failed the test. Now how about the good news? Lots more have passed it--and so can you.

First of all, you need to know how your car operates. Be sure you know, for example, how the parking brake, windshield wipers, defroster and emergency lights work before you take the test.

Worried about parking between the cones? Go on a Saturday to the DMV office where you plan to take the test and practice. The cones are usually left out in position. Then, practice driving on the freeway closest to that DMV office. You’ll only be on the freeway from one exit to the next, but the more practice you have, the better you’ll do.

On test day, just remember to take it slow and don’t get discouraged. Your examiner will tell you your mistakes. Work on improving those things you missed whether you pass the test or not.

Keep an open mind. If you practice and drive carefully, you’ll be able to pass and get your license.
