Orange County Almanac

Early efforts to split off what is now Orange County from Los Angeles County were hampered by rivalry between Anaheim and Santa Ana.

Anaheim residents made the first bid for a separate county in 1870. They proposed to call the new entity Anaheim County. By 1878, however, the booming city of Santa Ana demanded attention. An effort that year proposed forming Santa Ana County, with Anaheim as the county seat. Both plans failed in the Legislature.

In 1889, the new county was finally born. It was to be called Orange and the county seat would be decided by a vote of the people. Santa Ana, which had more residents than Anaheim, won that referendum.
