LONG RUN: The Los Angeles Marathon has outdistanced many running experts . . . but still has some scars dragging its pace. On the eve of the race’s 10th anniversary Sunday, marathon organizers say they have built a 98-pound weakling in the running world into a pre-Olympics training ground. But sponsorship losses and political scandal have left their mark (B1).

STAMPING OUT CRIME: It’s not gun-toting co-workers with grudges who worry the clerks at Arleta’s post office. It’s the customers. . . . The clerks there have been robbed three times in six months, prompting the U.S. Postal Service to add the first armed guard in the Valley. And now officials may make it the first Valley post office with bullet-proof glass, although spokesman Terri Bouffiou says “it doesn’t make it very customer-friendly.”

A GOODBY: Cardinal Roger M. Mahony (above) celebrated the funeral Mass for his mother Friday in the North Hollywood parish where she reared her children. . . . The Mass for Loretta Marie Mahony drew such dignitaries as Mayor Richard Riordan (B1).

NAH, IT COULDN’T BE: Police said Friday that they have nabbed the Reagan bandit, a 22-year-old Burbank man suspected of donning the former President’s latex likeness in a crime spree that began the day before Halloween (B4). . . . But they don’t know why the robber wore the mask. “I know that he dressed up in a mask that looked like Ronald Reagan,” said Lt. Larry Koch. “I don’t know what he dressed up as for Halloween.”

BUTTERFLY HUNT: Valley sightings in the last week have beefed up hopes of finding former Iron Butterfly bassist Philip Taylor Kramer, who disappeared on Feb. 12. . . . Volunteers are needed to search for the Thousand Oaks resident today by meeting at 199 W. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks any time after 7 a.m. Kramer was reportedly seen at a Canoga Park pawn shop, yard sale and Carl’s Jr. restaurant. Family members believe Kramer may have amnesia.
