Boston goalie Vincent Riendeau was expecting Pittsburgh’s Ron Francis to shoot. Instead, Francis passed.

Riendeau was expecting Larry Murphy to pass. Instead, Murphy shot, scoring the game-winner with 24 seconds left in overtime Saturday to lift the Penguins past the Bruins, 4-3, at Boston.

“He (Francis) was trying to shoot from the left. He saw the goalie lined up to him,” Murphy said. “He dropped it to me and the goalie didn’t have time to adjust.”

Ken Wregget stopped 42 shots to help the Penguins snap a slump in which they had lost three of four games.

The Bruins’ suffered their first loss in five games despite outshooting the Penguins, 45-20.

Winnipeg 4, San Jose 2--Alexei Zhamnov had a goal and two assists to give the Jets a victory over the San Jose Sharks at Winnipeg, Canada.

Washington 5, Montreal 1--Rookie Jim Carey made 27 saves and became the first Capital goaltender to record two victories this year in extending the Canadiens’ losing streak to a season-high four games, at Landover, Md.

Toronto 3, Calgary 2--Dave Andreychuk tipped a point shot past goaltender Trevor Kidd in the third period to cap the Maple Leafs’ rally at Toronto.

Hartford 3, Tampa Bay 2--Whaler forward Robert Kron scored at 1:11 of overtime in a victory at Hartford, Conn.

New Jersey 6, Florida 1--Brian Rolston and John MacLean scored goals 96 seconds apart, igniting a five-goal second period to help the Devils end the Panthers’ three-game unbeaten streak at East Rutherford, N.J.

Quebec 1, Buffalo 1--Defenseman Uwe Krupp scored at 5:29 of the third period, earning the Nordiques the tie at Quebec. Charlie Huddy scored for Buffalo.
