From Staff and Wire Reports

Don Zimmer, coach of the Colorado Rockies, was resting comfortably Sunday in the intensive-care unit of St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson after experiencing a temporary loss of blood flow to the brain.

Zimmer, 64, suffered what team trainer Dave Cilladi called a transient ischemic attack at about 6 p.m. Saturday.

Zimmer is expected to remain in intensive care at least through today.

Word that strike talks had disintegrated helped produce many happy replacement Angel players Sunday, but not for the obvious reason.

“In a worst-case scenario, let’s go out and win some games for the (major league) guys,” replacement first baseman John Fishel said. “Maybe they’ll look at us in a different light if they come back and we’re 20-2.”

Among those reporting to the Angels’ minor league camp at Mesa Sunday was pitcher Pete Janicki, the former El Dorado High and UCLA standout.

Janicki, the Angels’ first-round pick in 1992 (eighth overall), broke his arm in his first professional start, at Class-A Palm Springs in 1993. He broke his ankle last year and was able to start only three games for Class-A Lake Elsinore, going 1-2 with a 6.75 earned-run average.

Dodger President Peter O’Malley said Sunday night that players likely will miss their first paycheck if no agreement is reached within two weeks.

Major league players are scheduled to receive their first paycheck April 15.

The Dodgers won their fourth consecutive game by defeating the Houston Astros, 12-1.
