COSTA MESA : Taking a Gamble on an Act of Nature

Share

An unusual fund-raiser will be held at Estancia High School on Friday to help seniors raise money for graduation night festivities in June.

The school’s football field will be chalked off into 2,500 squares, with each square sold for $5 and randomly numbered 1 through 2,500. Then, two cows will be let out at noon onto the field, where, hopefully, they will perform three acts of nature before the clock strikes 1. The first act by either cow will net the holder of that square $250, the second $500 and the third $1,000. Squares will be sold before noon that day.

“We’re just hoping it doesn’t take too long,” school secretary Jenny Vanderlinde said.

An estimated 250 seniors need $10,000 to cover their graduation night party, when they plan to rent a private car on Amtrak and travel to a destination that, so far, remains a mystery.

Last year, graduation night was celebrated at the high school, but this year’s seniors wanted their night to be more exciting.

“We just wanted something different and new,” said Arlyne Gregorio, a treasurer for the associated student body.
