LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Self-Esteem Group Folds; Effort Called a Success

Share

The county’s Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility went out of business Tuesday, an apparent victim of its own success and the county’s poverty.

The group was created seven years ago, a child of the much-ridiculed California Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility, whose own creation caused titters from coast to coast.

With the lofty goal of identifying and remedying many of the ills that plague society, the local group worked to spotlight and acknowledge individuals and groups contributing to self-esteem and responsibility.

The group held an annual awards banquet and distributed thousands of questionnaires and brochures in its quest to promote community pride and awareness.

But all good things must come to an end, the Board of Supervisors decided.

The action was preceded by a recommendation by Alice Healy-Sesno, task force chairwoman, that its mission be deemed a success and its activities concluded. She also cited the county’s budget problems as a reason for disbanding the group, which had worked without a budget for several years.
