LONG BEACH : Zoning Changes OKd for Waterfront Plan

Share

The City Council has approved several zoning changes to help clear the way for an ambitious downtown waterfront development that would include a $100-million aquarium, hotels and retail shops.

Officials hope the project, called Queensway Bay, will revitalize the area and attract more tourists.

The council also approved an environmental impact report, which will allow the city to apply to the state Coastal Commission for the necessary building permits, said project manager Robert Paternoster. The commission is expected to vote on the project in May, Paternoster said.

This summer, the city plans to sell bonds to finance the aquarium’s construction. If all goes according to plan, Paternoster said, the aquarium construction could begin in the fall.
