ROUNDUP : CSUN Bounces Ball State, 15-13, 15-13, 15-8

Jon Baer had a career-high 36 kills as sixth-ranked Cal State Northridge swept eighth-ranked Ball State, 15-13, 15-13, 15-8, in the first round of the Long Beach State volleyball tournament Friday at the Pyramid.

The senior middle blocker hit .397 with five digs, five assisted blocks and two solo blocks.

Outside hitter Jason Hughes had 16 kills and middle blocker Oliver Heitmann added 15 kills with a .464 hitting percentage for the Matadors (10-5), who play Indiana-Purdue Ft. Wayne in the second round tonight.

Setter Travis Ferguson had 65 assists and nine digs for Northridge, which notched its fifth consecutive victory and second sweep of a top-10 opponent in as many matches. The Matadors defeated ninth-ranked USC on Thursday night.

Todd Reimer and Greg Romane each had 17 kills for the Cardinals (11-6), who upset top-ranked UCLA last week.

Eduardo Ferraz added 61 assists for Ball State.

Collin Smith had 12 kills and seven digs for Northridge, which hit .336 to Ball State’s .265.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Rio Mesa d. Camarillo, 15-11, 15-3, 15-10--Matt Fix had seven kills and Eric Huang added 21 assists for the Scorpions (0-2), who were shy three starters and one key reserve due to illness.
