Breakup Proponents Should Support Schools
* What an odd couple, Paula L. Boland (R-Granada Hills), an ultra-conservative, teaming with Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica), with impeccable liberal credentials, to unite in proposing to dismantle the Los Angeles school district.
Neither one has a clue to the problems involved, such as distribution of funds, financing, purchasing, transportation and, most important, the division of ethnicity among 640,000 students. I think they had better go back to the drawing board and contemplate the many problems that would be caused by having competing districts.
My advice to them is to join the real world and support education instead of trying to dismantle it. There is already parent control through school councils, and Los Angeles schools are already divided into administrative districts.
