VENTURA : Freeway Crash Snarls Traffic for 1 1/2 Hours

Share

An accident involving a jackknifed tractor-trailer and a car on the Ventura Freeway at Main Street snarled northbound traffic for about 1 1/2 hours Tuesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.

Edward Johnson, 76, of Ventura, was heading onto the Main Street off-ramp shortly after 2 p.m. when he apparently changed his mind and swerved back into the right lane, said CHP Officer Dave Cockrill.

The truck’s driver, Dean Gamble, swerved to avoid hitting Johnson’s car, and the two vehicles veered across traffic, closing the two northbound lanes, Cockrill said.

No one was injured, but Cockrill said Johnson’s car was demolished. Both vehicles were towed from the scene and the accident was cleared by 3:30 p.m.

Witnesses reported that at one point, traffic was backed up to Oxnard’s Rose Avenue exit.
