PREP GOLF ‘95: PREVIEW : Six Teams to Watch : Huntington Beach

Share

Coach: Bill Seckington (18th year).

1994: 16-2, 11-1 in the Sunset League. Won league, finished second in Southern Regional and fifth in the Southern Section team final.

Key returners: Tyler Clark, Sr.; Perry Dickey, Jr.; Jeff Farley, Sr.; Brian Schippel, Sr.; Chris Wilson, Jr.

Key newcomers: David Hung, Jr.; Tony Mendoza, So.

Outlook: Huntington Beach, winner of eight of the past nine Sunset League titles, is favored to win its third in a row despite the addition of Esperanza and Los Alamitos to the league. Farley, runner-up to Servite’s Jeff McGraw in the league individual tournament, and Dickey, whose father is director of golf at SeaCliff Country Club, are battling for the No. 1 spot. The next three--Schippel, Clark and Wilson--are not too far behind. “I’d say it’s one of the deeper teams that we’ve had,” Seckington said. “I think they have the potential to be extremely strong. It’s the first time I’ve had five players who could conceivably shoot 73 or 74 every time.” If they can do it May 15 at Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta, the Oilers could be celebrating a Southern Section championship.
