TOKYO — Rescuers called off the search Friday for two U.S. Navy crew members whose helicopter crashed in the Pacific Ocean off the east coast of Japan.
Petty Officers 1st Class William Quinn and Humberto Escobar were presumed dead in the crash of the SH-60F Seahawk, which went down Wednesday night 110 miles east of the U.S. naval base at Yokosuka, near Tokyo.
The helicopter was on routine aircraft guard duty off the aircraft carrier Independence, U.S. military officials said. An airborne guard hovers near a carrier to rescue any plane crew members in case of accidents.
