BREA : Council to Consider Permit for Coffeehouse Entertainment

A request to allow live weekend entertainment at Starbucks Coffee is among the items scheduled for consideration Tuesday by the City Council.

Starbucks, on West Imperial Highway in the Gateway Shopping Center, is seeking a permit that would allow jazz and easy listening performances from 8 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.

The city Development Services Department is recommending council approval if the entertainment consists primarily of two- to three-person musical groups, and if the performances are indoors.

Also on the council agenda is:

* An update on how the Orange County bankruptcy is affecting Brea.

* A proposed agreement between the Brea Redevelopment Agency and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County to construct an affordably priced, single-family home at 101 S. Flower Ave.

The four-bedroom unit would be sold to a low-income family that would provide a 1% down payment and put in at least 600 hours of “sweat equity” to help with construction. The home would be paid for with a 20-year, no-interest loan.

Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit housing corporation, completed a four-unit development in the 100 block of South Flower in 1994. A five-unit Habitat project is underway in the 200 block of South Poplar Avenue.

The city’s work with Habitat for Humanity is part of an effort to remove blighted conditions and provide affordable housing in Brea.
