A police officer was shot at early Sunday morning as he sat in his car, observing a group of people police described as “apparent gang members.”

The officer, whose name was not released, was not hurt.

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight in the 17400 block of Queens Lane. The officer was in a patrol car, heading south on Queens, when he noticed a group of people standing on a sidewalk near some apartment buildings, Lt. Jim Cutshaw said.

The officer shined a light on the group, which dispersed through a walkway that ran between the apartments, Cutshaw said.

As the officer continued to observe the activity, one of the group shot at the patrol car, shattering the passenger-side window, Cutshaw said. “The officer was unable to return fire,” he added.

According to residents, a team of police scoured the area immediately after the shooting, knocking on doors as they sought witnesses.

“All my family were just sleeping when we heard some gunshots,” said a 12-year-old boy who lives in an apartment on Queens. “Then some cops woke us up to ask if we knew anything, but we didn’t.”

The shooter remained at large. Police described him as in his 20s, about 5-foot-9, and wearing a brown hat and brown heavyweight shirt.
