Nation IN BRIEF : GEORGIA : Test Detects Spread of Prostate Cancer

A new blood test can tell whether prostate cancer has spread beyond the gland, enabling terminally ill patients to avoid ineffective and disabling surgery, a study suggested. The test, announced by the Atlanta-based American Cancer Society, if approved by the Food and Drug Administration could be available this year, said Dr. Carl Olsson, an author of the study. Once prostate cancer has spread, it is fatal. It is the second-leading cancer killer of men.
