Firm to Pay to Haul Abandoned Vehicles

A Santa Paula salvage firm will pay for the right to haul away abandoned vehicles tagged by the county under a new program approved by the Board of Supervisors.
Tri-County Auto Dismantlers will pay the county $30 for each vehicle it hauls as part of a 12-month vehicle abatement program approved by the board Tuesday. The company will recover its costs by salvaging parts and selling the scrap metal.
County officials estimate that Tri-County will haul an average of about 135 abandoned vehicles a month, which in turn would generate more than $48,000 in revenues for the county.
The abandoned-vehicle program is scheduled for one year, which will allow the county to take new bids at the end of the contract period, said Thomas Berg, director of the county’s Resource Management Agency. Berg proposed the program.
