A 1877 Supreme Court decision changed the course of Orange County history.

The case involved water rights and pitted farmers from Anaheim against residents of Santa Ana, Orange and Tustin. Anaheim argued that its corn, wheat and melon farmers had a right to large amounts of water from the Santa Ana River at all times, even during severe drought conditions. Other cities opposed Anaheim’s claim, fearing it would deprive them of the water their communities needed to flourish.

According to the historical journal Orange Countiana, the Supreme Court ruled against Anaheim--a decision that helped pave the way for growth in the Santa Ana, Orange and Tustin.
