COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Lott Leads Cal State Fullerton to Big West Gymnastics Title

The Cal State Fullerton women’s gymnastics team won its third consecutive Big West championship, scoring 191.375 Saturday night at UC Santa Barbara’s Campus Events Center.

Alexis Lott led the Titans’ charge, placing second in the individual all-around with a score of 38.650. Lott, a sophomore, placed first in two events, the uneven bars (9.75) and the floor exercise (9.825), but was edged by Utah State’s Tricia Yamamoto (38.725) for the individual title.

Junior Cristi Clifford placed second in the vault (9.75), third in the uneven bars (9.65) and fourth in the floor exercise (9.725) for a fourth-place finish in the all-around (38.375). Freshman Michele Lotta placed sixth in the all-around with a score of 37.650 in her first competition at the championships.

Utah State finished second in the team competition with a 190.550 and Boise State placed third with a 190.400.

In nonconference track and field:

UCI pair win events--Senior David Mayeda and freshman Borya Orloff each won events for UC Irvine in a nine-way track and field meet at UC Irvine.

Mayeda, a senior from University High, won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 52.45 seconds and is the defending Big West Conference champion in the event.

Orloff has won the pole vault in all three of UCI’s meets and went 16-6 3/4 to win Saturday’s event.

The Anteaters’ Toby Dean won the women’s 100 meters in 12.49 seconds and the 200 meters in 25.37 seconds.

Cal State Fullerton’s Zaylore Stout won the triple jump with a distance of 48-5 1/4 and Albert Avila placed second in the discus at 154-9. Cassie Lozano took second in the 400 meters for the Titans.

Long Beach State’s Nadene Valkoff won the women’s javelin with a throw of 131-7.

The Cal State Fullerton men’s team placed fourth, UC Irvine sixth and Long Beach State ninth. The Anteater women finished third, followed by Long Beach State in seventh and Cal State Fullerton eighth in the women’s eight-team meet.

In nonconference softball:

Azusa Pacific 5-5, Concordia 2-2--Lynsee Buck drove in two runs in the sixth inning to tie the score in the first game for Concordia (7-12). Azusa Pacific scored three in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded triple.
