Avis is offering eight-day, fly-drive packages for $299 per person, so it can shuttle cars from Phoenix, Ariz., to California. Travelers must make reservations by May 15 for the promotion, which is available until June 15 or until all 1,900 cars have been moved--whichever happens first. The rate includes one-way air fare to Phoenix on United or America West; a 1995 mid-sized car, such as a Grand Prix or Corsica, with unlimited mileage for eight days, and vouchers for seven nights accommodation at Ramada, Howard Johnson or Days Inn. Avis needs cars shuttled to destinations throughout California, from Sacramento to Los Angeles--but travelers can pick their own routes back. Drivers must have automobile insurance and buy their own gasoline. There are other rules and restrictions. Call Preferred Holidays, (800) 508-5454.
