COLLEGE ROUNDUP : USC Rallies to Defeat Titans, 7-4

Cal State Fullerton, playing for the first time since losing its No. 1 baseball ranking, was defeated by USC, 7-4, in a nonconference game Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Fullerton (26-5) was coming off a 6-3 loss to San Jose State in which the Titans made five errors. After that loss, Fullerton fell to No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America polls.

Fullerton scored a run in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, but USC (20-14) came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Four of the runs came with a grand slam by Greg Walbridge off Tom Dillon (3-1). Dillon faced five batters in the inning and got no one out.

Mark Kotsay and Tony Miranda had three hits each for Fullerton. Miranda had a double, Fullerton’s only extra-base hit.

In another nonconference game:

Long Beach State 13, Cal State Northridge 11--Casey Snow hit a grand slam and two-run home run for visiting Long Beach (16-11). Jason Minici had three hits, scored three runs and drove in another for Long Beach.

The first-inning grand slam was the first collegiate home run for Snow, a sophomore from Encino Crespi High.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Point Loma Nazarene 3, Concordia 2--Alfred Enano pitched eight innings of shutout relief, striking out seven and giving up only two hits to earn his seventh win for Point Loma Nazarene (20-12, 5-5).

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 11-1, La Verne 1-0--Shortstop Lisa Cansilla was three for four in the doubleheader with a triple, home run and three runs scored for Chapman (21-2). The Panthers also jumped to No. 1 in the Western Regional rankings Tuesday.

Concordia 10-6, Pacific Christian 1-3--Lisa LeFebvre pitched a three-hitter in the first game for Concordia (9-12). Teammate Ansa Zapatka was three for three in the game and Lasondra Kellum was three for four in the second game.

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 8, San Jose State 1--UC Irvine’s Janet Johnson defeated Michelle Matro, 7-6, 6-0, as the Anteaters (2-13) ended a six-match losing streak. San Jose State fell to 4-9.

In nonconference tennis:

Southern California College 9, Dordt (Iowa) 0--David Robbins and Mattias Johansson both breezed past their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, for Southern California College (10-2), which lost only one set in the match.
