ARCADIA: City officials announced Wednesday that they have officially received an application from the owners of Santa Anita Park to build the first phase of a massive entertainment complex in the racetrack’s parking lot. The Santa Anita Companies envision a village about the size of Disneyland’s Main Street with a 25-screen movie theater, restaurants, a theater, food outlets, bookstores and a virtual reality gaming center.

MONROVIA: The state Court of Appeal has upheld a 1993 City Council decision to deny a conditional use permit to a private home detention electronic monitoring company. In 1993, Monrovia rejected attempts by Linda Connelly and Associates Inc. to locate an office in the city for the monitoring and counseling of about 500 criminals.

PASADENA: The City Council put a plan to privatize some city services on hold this week after a confrontation with employees who fear for their jobs. The council approved an emergency motion to hold off on four contracts for privatizing street-sweeping, tree trimming and other public works services until a meeting can be held with union officials.

SOUTH EL MONTE: Another South El Monte councilman may be joining three others facing a recall effort. Citizens Against Recalls has served notice of intent to recall Councilman Joseph Gonzales. The notice is in opposition to a recall drive against Mayor Vera Valdiviez and Councilmen Albert G. Perez and Art Olmos led by Gonzales’ father, John D. Gonzales, according to the new recall group. It accuses Joseph Gonzales of supporting his father’s efforts.
